We take on asset performance risk, utilising our investments expertise as a Group to guarantee underlying asset cashflows which helps our clients meet their obligations.
Mortality and longevity risk
We are experts in biometric or life-related risks, and we have extensive experience analysing mortality and longevity, and underwriting risk across global markets.
Global intermediation
We help our clients transfer risks globally, to ensure they are able to obtain the protection that best meets their needs.

Annuities
Legal & General Retirement Institutional is the UK’s longest-serving active bulk annuity provider. We are the only insurer to have been operating continuously in the UK market since our entrance in 1987 to the present day. Our retirement annuity book is £85 billion as at 30 June 2021.
Across our retail and institutional retirement businesses, we look after more than 1 million customers, over 500,000 of which are institutional customers who have had their retirement benefits secured with us.
Investing
Legal & General Capital is Legal & General Group’s alternative asset platform, creating assets for Legal & General Retirement and third-party clients in order to achieve improved risk-adjusted returns for Legal & General Group shareholders.
We have built market-leading capabilities in a range of alternative assets, delivering depth of resource, track record and intellectual property. We seek opportunities to invest in sectors where there is a lack of investment and enduring demand to support society’s needs, namely residential property, specialist commercial property, clean energy and SME Finance.

Insurance
Legal & General Insurance has been offering life insurance cover since 1836 and is the UK’s number one individual life insurance provider. Our group protection business in the UK offers life insurance and income protection products to individuals through their employers and we offer term-life insurance in the US. We now have over 5.5 million UK life insurance customers, 1.8 million people in group protection schemes and approaching 1.3 million US term-life insurance policyholders.
